Educational Background.I teach at Bates College in Maine where I’m Charles A. Dana Professor of Theater. I did my undergraduate work at Columbia University, and I hold the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard.

My Experience.I’ve directed more than fifty productions in academic and professional theaters in the United States and Europe, and am the author of four plays, including Manny’s War, which was nominated for the New Play Award of the American Theater Critics Association. I’ve taught courses on theater history, dramatic literature, directing, and playwriting, and for twenty years I offered a freshman seminar on Hamlet. I’ve taught modern drama and film studies at Harvard, and performance skills at the University of Maine School of Law. I’ve also taught film and theater in Tokyo, London, Budapest, and Prague, and was a Fulbright Scholar in Hungary. As noted above, I’ve served as humanities scholar and dramaturg for Maine’s two professional theaters, Portland Stage Company and The Public Theatre.
